Lake Houston Water Quality Study CWA

Clients: Coastal Water Authority, City of Houston
Houston, Texas

The Coastal Water Authority (CWA) operates and maintains facilities of Lake Houston, an impoundment for drinking water supply. The City of Houston (COH) and CWA initiated the Lake Houston Water Quality Study (LHWQS) to assess the potential impacts of existing and proposed projects on Lake Houston water quality, particularly with regards to water treatment processes at the existing and future water purification plants. This study evaluated the hydraulic (i.e., flow conveyance) impacts of the ongoing / proposed projects on upstream and downstream channels under a range of hydrologic (i.e., precipitation / runoff) conditions.

The study evaluated the water quality and hydraulic impacts of four ongoing /proposed projects:

introduction of Luce Bayou Inter-basin Transfer flows,
dredging of Lake Houston and its tributaries
interim joint reservoir operations protocol and
addition of new flood control gates at the Lake Houston Dam.
